As the 17th World Book Day dawns and endless Harry Potters rush off to school, Cathy Rentzenbrink reflects on the boost the Quick Reads initiative has given to adult literacy.
Today, children in over 100 countries around the world will dress up as their favourite fictional characters to celebrate reading. The 17th annual World Book Day, which encourages children to explore the pleasures of books, is as good a reason as any to talk about literacy. Especially when one in six adults of working age in Britain find reading difficult or may never pick up a book.
