Making the most of MS 'Word'

Most of us now use Microsoft's Word. But who remembers Data Processing Designs Inc with their embryonic version of Word who regularly lost out to another piece of computer history, WordStar, as the best word-processing package around.

Under Microsoft's parentage, Word has steadily dominated the opposition. But if you ever need to use other word processors, you will discover that they almost all work in a very similar way.

So these are some articles about Word to help you explore some of its lesser known facilities.

Some 'quickies'

Word won't start.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if word is trying to run. If it is, end it. Look for a file called normal.dot (not doc). This is the document template. Rename or remove the file. When you restart, a new template will be created and all should work well.

Spell Checker won't work

If you move documents about between computers or paste items in from the web, then the document can forget which language you want to work in. Highlight all the text, go to the Tools menu and then Language. Now select the language you want to use. Make sure that the 'check spelling' box at the bottom of the page is unchecked.

Inserting foreign accents

On the Insert menu, select Symbol. You will find that there are several different sets of symbols so you might have to choose the right one. Find the symbol and highlight it. Click insert once and close the symbols page.
